Healthy Chicken and Quinoa Bowl (Easy High-Protein Meal)
How to Make a Healthy Chicken and Quinoa Bowl
Follow these easy steps to prepare a fresh, flavorful bowl at home.
Step 1: Rinse the quinoa
Place the quinoa in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold running water for about 30 seconds, gently rubbing the grains with your fingers.
Rinsing helps remove the natural coating that can make quinoa taste bitter. Let the water drain well before cooking.
Step 2: Cook the quinoa
Add the rinsed quinoa, chicken broth or water, and optional salt to a medium saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the liquid has been absorbed and the quinoa looks fluffy.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the quinoa gently with a fork.
If there is still excess liquid, let it cook for another minute or two. Avoid stirring constantly while the quinoa simmers.
Step 3: Season the chicken
While the quinoa cooks, pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels.
In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper.
Rub the chicken with the olive oil and lemon juice, then coat both sides evenly with the seasoning mixture.
For more even cooking, pound especially thick chicken breasts to a more uniform thickness.
Step 4: Cook the chicken
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the seasoned chicken and cook for approximately 5–7 minutes per side, depending on its thickness.
The chicken is ready when its thickest part reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, measured with a food thermometer.
Transfer the cooked chicken to a clean cutting board and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Resting helps the juices redistribute and makes the chicken more tender.
If your chicken breasts are particularly thick, they may need additional cooking time. Always use the internal temperature rather than appearance alone to determine doneness.
